• Controls, software, and business method patents

Before Becoming a Lawyer
Pabitra’s legal career grew organically from a distinguished engineering and research background that began in India. He earned his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur — one of India’s most prestigious technical institutions — and went on to complete his Ph.D. in Technology Management with a concentration in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru.

After earning his doctorate, Pabitra joined GE Global Research in Bangalore as a Patent Engineer, where his talent for intellectual property work quickly became evident. General Electric recognized his exceptional aptitude and sponsored his legal education at Albany Law School. He returned to GE’s Niskayuna, New York campus as a Patent Agent and was subsequently promoted to Patent Attorney. In that capacity, he served GE Renewable Energy as in-house counsel, protecting foundational innovations in wind energy and related technologies, directing global portfolio strategy, and collaborating with litigation teams on inter partes review proceedings and ITC investigations.

Before transitioning to patent law, Pabitra worked as an Application Engineer and Product Data Manager in India’s engineering and technology sector, contributing to CAD/CAM/CAE implementation, visual simulation systems, and software product development at organizations including Siemens Information Systems Ltd., EDS Technologies Ltd., and GE Global Research. He also served as a Design Engineer at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where he developed engineering solutions for space and satellite applications.
